Tennis For Free aims to make tennis courts in public parks and open spaces free of charge. To date we have found 175 local councils in the UK that offer free tennis provision on their sites. In addition to this we presently offer free coaching at nine of these sites and are constantly looking for funding so we can expand on our goal of having tennis for free throughout the country. Part of our mission is to increase participation in tennis nationwide for all ages regardless of ability, background, race and financial circumstance. Everyone would benefit from this initiative. Young, middle-aged and old could all play tennis for nothing. A campaign to get members from tennis clubs to donate their old balls and rackets to the parks would mean that the facilities would be there - all people would need to do is turn up. Tennis For Free is not just about tennis, it reaches further than just hitting tennis balls. It gives children the opportunity to channel their energy into sport rather than vandalism, it gives people a sense of belonging and it is helping to build a community in and around the country’s parks. It provides a perfect chance for children and their parents to get out, be active and spend time together whilst making the most of their local facilities. There would be huge health and social benefits. Tennis is a good aerobic sport and is recommended by doctors as an activity, which can prevent heart disease etc. Also, in the school holidays, potentially bored kids who might become a social nuisance may find themselves absorbed on the tennis courts all day.
